Death by 1000 Decisions: A Creekside Folly Update + Other Stuff

Happy Saturday, friends!

It’s time for the weekend post with Kim and Elizabeth, our weekly roundup of inspirations and goings on.

With the Olympics underway and Super Bowl food prep in full swing, there’s a lot going on so I’m going to keep today’s dispatch short. Let’s start with an update on my Creekside follies.

This post includes some commissionable links; see my disclosure policy here .

Kitchen Rendering | Eye for Pretty

Over at the Creekside Folly it was another week of non-stop fun, and that signifies progress.

This week we had framers, roofers, plumbers, electricians, HVAC guys and more on site … at the same time. Questions were flying at me right and left. Where would you like the vents, outlets, switches, fixtures, recessed lights, and on and on. My personal favorite, what height would you like this or that? I don’t know … the right height?

My head is exploding with what feels like death by 1000 decisions. Calling the new house the Folly feels more apt than ever.

Highlights of the week ~

  • The flooring we chose a year ago was discontinued … this wasn’t discovered until it was time to order. After running around like a crazy person I found a new one I like just as much, if not more.
  • I woke up in the middle of the night realizing I’d made the wrong interior door choice. The next morning I called Dolan Lumber to make the switcheroo. Last night I woke up panicked that that was the wrong choice.
  • Pressure to choose interior trim and molding has been looming … I finally did it.
  • I got a first look at our cabinetry and built-in drawings. Designer extraordinary, Ashley from Eye-for-Pretty, guided me through the process of fine tuning the design details. We’re waiting for revised drawings, and pricing … I’m braced for impact.

If I haven’t mentioned it before, the cost of materials, fixtures, appliances – everything – is twice as much as it was six years ago when we renovated Snowberry. I’m not exaggerating. We’ve purchased many of the same things – windows, fireplace, appliances – 2x the cost.

In less fraught Folly news, Bonnee from California Closets made her first site visit. I’m obsessed with California Closets. I’ll never forget the joy of our first California Closet in 2003. The closet was small, and the closet system doubled its usable space. I’ve been a convert since and this will be our sixth outing with them – they should sponsor me.

In the week ahead cement will be poured in the garage, front entry and covered patio and siding will start going up.

Jim tells me we’re two weeks away from sheet rock.

It may have taken a long time to get started, but now that we’re moving, we’re really moving. And I have to say that everyone working on the house is incredibly nice, hard-working and outstanding at their jobs … all my whining to the contrary.

This shot from the backyard really demonstrates how narrow the house is due to an unusually narrow lot. And before you ask what were we thinking, remember it’s all about location, location, location.

To take the edge off cope with all the excitement, I’ve succumbed to a pretzel addiction. Batch & Brine, a restaurant I can walk to from the pied-à-terre, makes an excellent pretzel with just the right amount of salt. They offer mustard and beer cheese dipping sauces, but I take my pretzels straight up.

Back to the Super Bowl, and food I shouldn’t be eating, I’ve procured my World Famous Bean Dip ingredients … and Ruffles. To offset the indulgence, I’ll also make a crudité platter, in other words I’ll chop some veggies, and make my aunt’s Truly Delicious Dip. If I’m feeling adventurous I’ll make these sticky baked chicken wings. That will be a game time decision.

I guess I should mention that the Super Bowl is here in the Bay Area. I feel like we just hosted, but it’s been 10 years. Reality is that while all the talk is about San Francisco, and all the pre-game activities are in the City, the actual game is in Santa Clara which is a ways down the road in the South Bay … closer to Kim. It couldn’t be nicer weather and I’ve been following the San Francisco mayor as he dashes from one fun event to the next. Last night there was a dance party in Union Square. I’m also enjoy listening to a number of men who like to mock our City blathering on about how awesome it is. Who knew? Eye roll.  Yep, maybe visit a place before having an opinion about it.

In the midst of all the running around looking at flooring, molding, cabinets, and who knows what else, I managed to get to the dermatologist for my semi-annual skin check. I passed with flying colors. It’s been just over a year since my last skin cancer procedures. The one on my face – MOHs followed by plastic surgery – healed beautifully although I notice a slight pull from the bridge of my nose casting a dark spot under my eye. It could be a lot worse. And on that note, when was your last skin check?!

While at the derm I restocked two of my favorite skincare essentials … SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic and P-TIOX. Both are pricey, but effective. At least I think they are. They’re the only products I’m shelling out the big bucks for right now. My day and nighttime sunscreen and moisturizers are more reasonably priced.

We’re a week from Valentine’s Day which brings on my nostalgia for See’s Candy. When I was growing up my dad brought home their classic heart shaped box of nuts and chews for my mom on Valentine’s Day, and little heart boxes for me and my sister. It was such a treat and we were so excited. I need to get over to See’s this weekend and gather treats for the littles. I like to make Valentine cookies for them, but the pied-à-terre isn’t conducive to culinary adventuring + most of my baking stuff is in storage.

If you’re in need of Valentine’s treat ideas, you’ll find my favorite roll cookie and icing recipes here. Plus an easy and decadent chocolate dessert here. And, when all else fails, make Raspberry Kir Royale’s … appropriate for all winter holidays and celebrations. And especially fun – and easy – for a group.

If you’re looking for Valentine and Galentine gift ideas, my favorite boutique – Flaunt in Danville – is well stocked with cute things. Visit their online Valentine’s Day curation here. After See’s I’m going straight  to Flaunt to pick out gifts for the nieces and the grands. A few things I have my eye on are this cozy blanket, these red and white stripped socks (the nieces think I’m obsessed with socks, and I am because my feet are always cold), these are cute too. Continuing my warm-feet obsession, these cozy heart slippers. I have these Jenny Bird earrings and wear them all. the. time. Being a sucker for candles, Flaunt always has something pretty and unique like this or this.

It’s come to my attention that I overuse the exclamation point. I’ve vowed to be vigilant against future abuse. That said, I didn’t make it through the first sentence – or is that a salutation – today so I’ve got work to do. My mom, pre-kids, was a middle school English teacher and tormented me by continually correcting my grammar. Last weekend marked 27 years since her passing and of course I’d give anything to have her here keeping me honest. She would have been a wonderful editor for the blog … whether I asked her or not. She’d also get a big kick out of it and when I sit down to write these weekly dispatches I often think about what topics of the week would be of interest to her.

Odds & Socks ~

Season two of The Night Manager is at the top of my watch list. It’s been ten years, so I’ll probably rewatch season one first, but not until after the Olympics. Obviously. If you’re into spy dramas, more to watch.

Nordstrom is having some sort of sale and I’m restocking my favorite unmentionables … this True & Co. bra.

If you’re planning a warm weather vacation (don’t rub it in), this Ann Mashburn long shirt-dress is an ideal piece that saves room in your suitcase by multitasking as a pool coverup, casual lunch and dinner dress.

Bad Bunny and Falling Iguanas this weekend.

  1. I can sympathize your hectic decision schedule. In haste, I neglected to take my 5’3″ stature into account when we did our kitchen reno. The counters are the perfect height for my 6′ tall husband but alas are just that bit too high for me when mixing or pouring. It’s an “oh well” moment.

    1. Debra … isn’t it ironic that the lessons we learn in building only apply to the next house we build. And most aren’t crazy enough to do it again. I’m sure your kitchen is gorgeous … and I hope your husband likes to cook! xo

  2. Love the new kitchen rendition! Having built a house too, I know what you’re going through. I had no idea I had to pick out where the outlets would go!
Question about the Pots de Creme recipe. Do you think I could sub Kahlua for the Chambord ?

    1. Nanci … we think we’re prepared and have it all planned out and then that unexpected question comes and … uh oh. I don’t see any reason why Kailua wouldn’t work. Let me know! xo

  3. Juliet! (Exclamation points are my love language:)
I adore your folly kitchen and your fun, funny, inspiring writing! Your mom would be impressed and proud!
Keep at it, my friend. You bring such love & light to us all!
    XO Kym

  4. Love the house update. THAT KITCHEN!!!
And I love that you make/made rolled, iced cookies. ❤️ I did for years and years. Then I went gluten free……maybe I will start that up again and give them away quickly.
And I use WAY too many exclamation points too, but my downfall is elipses……

  5. Juliet, the kitchen looks fabulous! I cannot wait to see the entire finished project.
I am sure that you mom is so proud of you and all that you have accomplished. As for the ! points, keep them coming!!!!
Enjoy the Olympics and the SB.
    xo

  6. Thank you for sharing your new house adventures. We are building too, though in NC. Could you share your kitchen paint color on cabinets? We are struggling with that decision and are leaning toward alabaster uppers with mid tone wood lowers. This is hard but LOVE your style and trust your advice and opinion as I know you research and have excellent taste.

    1. Barbara, thank you for you sweet and kind words. How exciting that you’re building too. The decision making process feels overwhelming and never-ending. We haven’t decided on our kitchen cabinet paint color, but are leaning toward Natural Cream OC-14. Our island will be a walnut stain. Good luck on your project and let me know what paint color you settle on. xo

  7. Hi Juliet — I remember being where you are on the house build. I was pretty decisive about all my decisions, but towards the end the electrician asked me where I wanted the recessed lights on the porch. I just stared at him blankly and told him to make the decision. That said, I wish they had asked me about some of the light switch placement — right in the middle of the wall! Your kitchen rendering looks gorgeous, and I love the flooring choice! It is all going to be fabulous! Love that mixed stripe Ann Mashburn dress… Take care, my friend! It will all be worth it!

    1. Molly, I remember being in that same place where so many decisions had been made I just couldn’t do it anymore. Just put them wherever!!! This week as I was wringing my hands and changing my mind over a fixture placement it occurred to me to ask Harley, our electrician, what he thought. He was happy to tell me and it felt right so I did that. Your home is so much larger … and you have the guest house too … I can’t even imagine how you did it. But you did … and beautifully. Don’t you love that dress?! Happy weekend, friend. xoxo

  8. Hi Juliet,
    Your kitchen rendering looks beautiful.
I can imagine how you must have been on decision fatigue, so much to think about. Counter height is so important, especially in the bathrooms where you are brushing your teeth and in general. You get it, you have built homes many times.
The pretzel looks so good, now I’m hungry for one. You are going to get into trouble having them so close by.
Wonderful news on your check up, YES, I always get my annual skin check up, just had mine in December 2025.
I like your exclamations, keep them up. I think they are fun, and it’s part of your fun personality when you write your blog.
I understand you missing your mom, I so get it. I’m in the same boat, and my Papa too. The blessing is you have a wonderful and close family that helps fill the void.
Enjoy your weekend, the winter Olympics, and the Super Bowl. Having lived right in SF, Marin County, and down the peninsula I feel such a part of the whole area still. It will always be a big part of me even though I live in AZ.
Take care and stay safe out there.

    1. Katherine! You would have loved the past week – and weekend – in the Bay Area. All your favorite spots were sunny and warm and everyone in town for the Super Bowl was posting like crazy about what a beautiful city – and Bay Area – we’re lucky enough to enjoy. Rain’s returning this week though. Ha! As for home building, you’re right about counter height, and I never understand the lower bath counters in some new builds. Kids grow … and leaving over to brush you teeth isn’t fun. I hope you find a pretzel … just thinking about it I’m hungry again. Have a wonderful week! xo

  9. Hi Juliet,
I love reading your writing and I bet your mom would be so proud. I have never done a renovation (very expensive school fees yes)so I am loving hearing all about the details and choices. My kitchen is stuck in the 1970’s but one day!! Love the dress!Happy weekend.

  10. I, too have to curb my enthusiasm for using the exclamation point. Wasn’t there a Seinfeld episode about that with Elaine?

Decisions, decisions turn into analysis paralysis. Love your replay on the heighth of outlets 🙂

    1. Maria! You’re right … I remember that episode. I’l have to track it down … thanks for reminding me. Hope you had a wonderful weekend! xo

  11. 1. Exclamation points are wonderful
    2. I can’t wait to try your slightly more heart friendly bean dip tomorrow
    3. The house looks adorable from the back
    4. The placement of switches and outlets and light fixtures and the height of anything (range hood and bathroom mirrors) I’m taking about you) is the HARDEST
    5. Interior doors can make or break a house

    You got this.

  12. Juliet the kitchen looks BEYOND amazing! (that needed an exclamation point for sure ;))

I can’t believe how quickly it’s coming together now. Really excited to see it when it’s all done.

And can I say that almost every week that I write the blog, I remove at least one exclamation point haha! (usually many more)

    Happy weekend friend!

    Sheila
    xo

    1. Sheila! Coco Chanel said something like … after getting dressed, take one thing off before leaving the house. Translate to … remove one explanation point before publishing. In my case, maybe two or three. xo

  13. Hi Juliet,
I just made the dip for today’s Super Bowl and wanted to say thanks so much for the recipe it is fabulous. I posted it to my sisters in laws! Have a lovely Sunday xo

    1. Francesca! I’m beyond delight to hear this! Today is a day of reckoning … lots of water to flush out all the salt. It was worth it though. xo

  14. Sounds like it is quite a stressful time re the house. But great news re skin check-up. I have had 2 basal cell cacinomas removed. Last check up was clear. x

  15. Juliet, So fun to see the house. I love the kitchen and the paneling. I think the colors are lovely. You’ve become a pro now building homes. I’m sure it will all be lovely. I hate the switch positioning. My electrician tried to put so many in to be “convenient”, but honestly they just annoy me as I can barely hang anything, they are everywhere.

I am guilty of using the exclamation mark too much. I’m sure people have unsubscribed because of it. Your mom would be proud of your writing. I’m so sorry this time of year is hard. My mom also passed 11 years ago this week.

I have used that C serum. Love Skinceuticals! Maybe I need the other serum too. I think they have great things.
Ann Mashburn is one of my favorite brands too.

We made your bean dip and loved it!
    xo

  16. I love following along your new home design – your kitchen is a dream! Do you mind sharing the link to the Jenny Bird earrings pls? I have her large hoops which is a fav for evening and looking for something different now. Thank you!
